There is also a Young Adult Program for individuals ages 17 to 28.  This program is designed for young adults that struggled throughout high school and may also be experiencing difficulites either in employment or college/university due to learning disabilities.

What types of students can benefit from the Arrowsmith Program?

Students with specific learning disabilities among those described in the Descriptions of 19 Dysfunctions section of our website. Please also see the Admissions page.

How long is the program?

A student with five or more areas of weakness will usually require a three to four year program of full time attendance.

What academic subjects and school credits are available?

Eaton Arrowsmith School offers English and Math throughout all grades (Grades 1 to 12). In addition, the English program incorporates Social Study concepts.  For Grades 10 through 12 a variety of options are available in order for students to receive credit including Distance Education courses monitored by our classroom teachers. Students entering the program in Grade 9 through 12 meet with administrative staff to decide the best cognitive and academic program to achieve personal goals whether that be immediate employment or postsecondary training. It is important to note that the focus of Eaton Arrowsmith School is cognitive remediation of neurodevelopmental weaknesses, and thus the majority of the academic day is spent working on cognitive exercises.

Do students have to repeat grades if they attend Eaton Arrowsmith school?

For students re-entering school prior to the start of Grade 10 there is no need to repeat grades. Eaton Arrowsmith School covers curriculum requirements for the most significant subjects such as Math and English. For students attending Eaton Arrowsmith School during Grade 10, 11 and even 12 transition planning meetings are conducted to determine the best course of action after completing the Arrowsmith program. This could include taking Distance Education classes in order to receive credit for courses taken in Grades 10, 11 and 12, or deciding to take the GED after completion of the Arrowsmith program. As well, some students and their families may decided to repeat Grade 10 or 11 at public or private school, knowing that the significant cognitive improvements gained at Eaton Arrowsmith School will result in better academic outcomes and more opportunities for postsecondary education.

Is the initial testing and assessment a requirement for all incoming students?

Yes. These tests enable us to identify specific learning dysfunctions and design individual programs for each student.

What types of tests are used?

The majority of the tests were designed at Arrowsmith School in Toronto and are used to identify levels of strength and weakness in each of the 19 learning areas that are described in the Descriptions of 19 Dysfunctions section of our website. We also use a number of standardized achievement tests to evaluate academic levels.

Can assessments done elsewhere be used in place of the initial testing?

No. While prior assessments are useful in providing background information, we employ a number of tests and one-to-one assessments that are unique to Eaton Arrowsmith School.

Is the Arrowsmith Program effective?

Yes. The results of a recent study strongly support the Arrowsmith Program as instrumental in changing the developmental course of the majority of children with learning disabilities in this sample.

Do you offer part-time programs?

Yes. A Part-time Program is available after initial testing and assessment. In the part-time program, the student is limited to working on only two areas (8 hours per week) since a minimum of 4 hours per week is required to strengthen each area. The part-time program benefits students with four or fewer problem areas.

We also offer a bi-weekly Motor Symbol Sequencing Program that addresses the Motor Symbol Sequencing dysfunction. The Motor Symbol Sequencing Saturday program does not require testing.

Is the Arrowsmith Program available elsewhere?

Yes. The Arrowsmith Program is offered in seven schools in the Toronto Catholic District School Board and in other public and independent schools in Ontario and British Columbia. Please see the List of Schools.
