Eaton Arrowsmith School currently offers two types of part-time programs: 1. An after school part-time program for students who have four or fewer areas of difficulty. Students entering the after-school part-time program will require the full Arrowsmith testing. 2. The Saturday morning motor symbol sequencing program. No testing is required for this program. Students enrolling in a part-time program will fit the profile of the typical Eaton Arrowsmith School student in that they • will be of average or above average intelligence • do not suffer from emotional or behavioural disorders that would significantly affect their participation in the Arrowsmith Program • do not suffer from acquired brain injury or severe intellectual or cognitive disorders such as universal global delay, mental retardation, developmental delay, Down syndrome, autism, pervasive developmental disorder or Aspergers syndrome.
The after school part-time program is available for students who have four or fewer areas of difficulty. It is not possible to address the needs of a student with more than four problem areas in a part-time program. Students entering the after school part-time program will require the full Eaton Arrowsmith School testing in order that we may assess their areas of weakness and design an appropriate program. Please see the Testing and Admissions pages of our web site for information about testing procedures and the admissions process. The after school part-time program is divided into two terms with 32 classes in each term. The first term begins in October and continues until the end of January and the second term begins in February and continues to June. Classes are held at Eaton Arrowsmith School on Tuesday and Thursday of each week and are two hours in length starting at 4:00 p.m. and ending at 6:00 p.m. Students in this program will be engaged in the same Arrowsmith Program exercises as students in the full-time day program and work under the supervision of Eaton Arrowsmith School teachers. Fees and Refunds The fee for the Part-time Program is $4,620.00 for the full year in addition to the initial testing fee of $2,200. Please note that fees are not refundable and that we cannot provide make-up classes for classes that may be missed.
Who can benefit from this program? A student with this dysfunction will have some or all of the following problems: • difficulty with the mechanical aspect of writing For a more complete description of this dysfunction, please refer to the List of 19 Learning Dysfunctions section of our web site. This area is the slowest to change but is the easiest to identify. The Motor Symbol Sequencing program is only one component of the Arrowsmith Program and the typical student will have other areas of learning difficulty that this exercise does not address and which will continue to cause the student difficulty. This is only one component of the larger treatment program at Eaton Arrowsmith School. What is involved? The student will work in a small group of other students together accompanied by his or her parent, guardian or other adult family member under the supervision of an Eaton Arrowsmith School teacher. The student and the family member will receive training in the two exercises that comprise the Motor Symbol Sequencing program. The family member will learn how to monitor the performance of the exercises to ensure that they are completed properly and will monitor the student's homework and record progress at home between sessions. The first two sessions are devoted to training the student and the family member in the proper method of performing the exercises. At subsequent sessions, the student's progress will be monitored and reviewed and the schedule of exercises modified as required. The student is expected to do a minimum of four hours homework on the exercises each week between sessions following a schedule that is assigned by the Arrowsmith Program teacher. The program runs from the beginning of October to the middle of June and comprises eighteen one-hour sessions at Eaton Arrowsmith School and includes instruction and training in the exercises, ongoing monitoring by the Eaton Arrowsmith School teacher and provision of all materials and exercise sheets as follows: • Tracing sheets Testing is not required for this program, however we request that you provide a current sample of your child's handwriting or printing, copies of the two most recent report cards and copies of previous assessments at the time of application.
